What counts as a business day?

A business day is a weekday that isn't a holiday on the calendar that matters to you, so the answer depends on whose calendar it is. Weekends never count. A US federal holiday such as Thanksgiving isn't a business day for most US businesses; a stock exchange has its own list (NYSE closes on Good Friday, which isn't a federal holiday, and trades on Columbus Day, which is); and payment systems such as the Fed, TARGET2 and BACS keep their own lists again.

Examples from our data: there are 22 US stock settlement days (NYSE and Fed both open) from 2026-12-01 up to 2027-01-01, and 3 US business days after Wednesday 2026-11-25 is 2026-12-01 (Thanksgiving and the weekend are skipped).
